group insurance

the accelerated benefit option is available to servicememberscovered under sgli, veterans covered under vgli,as well as spouses covered under family servicemembers' group life insurance. and this benefit is reallyan advanced payment of the death benefit payableunder these programs. specifically membersor their spouses under the case of family sgli can obtain up to 50% of their total coverage prior to death if they havea terminal illness

with a prognosisof nine months or less to live from a physician. another key pointin this benefit is the member must be competent to applyfor this benefit. you cannot wait until you havea condition that results in incompetencysuch as brain cancer. you have to take this actionas the member yourself so that we know this is whatyou wish to do with your money. we don't want anyone to betaking that money

without having their consent. the key thing here is that that money can be used for anything. it can be used to takea family vacation. it can be used to payfor medical bills. there is norestriction on that. however it will reducethe benefit paid to the beneficiary afterthe death of the member. another point that we've been asked is that if the member or their spouse outlivestheir nine-month prognosis,

we're not in any way coming back and taking the money away from the member. it would still reducethe benefit to the beneficiary but we're not comingand taking your money back. to apply for the acceleratedbenefit option, servicemembers and veteransneed to use sglv form 8284. for servicemembers, they simply need to go to their physician, have their physician complete the form with their prognosis. they then need to take the form to their personnel office

who will complete their section and forward it to casualty without any further actionby the member. for members covered under veterans group life insurance, they also needto fill out sglv 8284. they again need to go totheir physician for a prognosis and then they needto mail the form to the office of servicemembers'group life insurance at the address listedon the form. in contrast for spousescovered under

family servicemembers'group life insurance, they need to completesglv 8284a, similar to the 8284 except that the spouse also needs to complete a sectionof the form providing a privacy releasefor their medical information. all the other steps are the same as for the servicemember.
